beautiful night for drum corps :)

I just got back from Drums On Parade in Madison, WI. And let me tell you there were some good looking corps out there!

But I’ll just give you a short recap of the night.

All-Age Corps

2nd Place: Kilties (68.250) as you may be able to gather, the Kilties…all wear kilts. However, the kilts don’t prevent them from putting on a great show. This year’s repertoire was A Night At The Opera, which I actually enjoyed more than I thought I would. Their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody was well done, in my humble opinion. Overall, I liked it.

1st Place: Minnesota Brass (78.000) This year’s show, Caravan, was solid. I’d never seen Minnesota Brass before, and I’m glad that now I have. Enough said.

Open Class

2nd Place: Racine Scouts (54.500) True, they have a very small corp. I mean, the drumline may even be bigger than the horn line. And with only three guard members, well that leaves a lot of open field. I was just not really impressed. Not to mention that Fascinating Rhythms - The Music Of George Gershwin may not have been a great show to choose.

1st Place: Colt Cadets (59.900) Probably looked even better in comparison, performing right after Racine Scouts, but I did like the show (Sorcerers’ Revenge). Wicked fans will be happy to know that “For Good” was not completely butchered, although sometimes I lost the melody line.

World Class

6th Place: Pioneer (59.800) The opener for The Corps Prayer was, pardon my slang, a legit good time. It was “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, and the crowd was definitely into it. It was a lot better than I had expected from Pioneer.

5th Place: Glassmen (69.400) 5th place sounds deserving of a lesser performance than the Glassmen gave. This year’s repertoire was The Prayer Cycle (interesting that both the prayer-themed shows where one after another), and I thought they did a great job. It was the first time I really got the goosebumps during the night.

4th Place: Madison Scouts (70.900) Loved it. Maybe that’s just because I’m a Scouts fan and have Scout/Scout alumni friends, but I thought it was great, the opening few minutes especially. The encore was fantastic as well. Not to mention that the corp singing Never Walk Alone at the end honestly made me want to cry. I’m going to miss my marching band days.

3rd Place: Blue Stars (73.500) This year’s show was Houdini, and while I don’t always like how many props the Blue Stars end up using, their sound was incredible. The drumline, phenomenal.

2nd Place: Cavaliers (76.600) Now this. What the hell. Mad World was a kick-ass show. It was love at first sight for me, but then again I’m biased (note the Cavaliers sweatshirt in the picture). But seriously. This show was great. Everything about it.

1st Place: The Cadets (78.800) I’ll start off by saying that the Cadets’ drumline was absolutely awesome. There was an extensive drum solo toward the end of their show, Toy Souldier, that literally knocked the socks off of everyone in the stands. Even those who weren’t wearing socks, such as myself. But as for the rest of the show? Eh. Just… eh. While the drumline, along with drum major “Little Jeffrey” may have won my heart… the show did not, nor do I think it should have won first place.
